Sk8er Boi Video Analysis

Sk8er Boi by Avril Lavigne is the song that we have chosen to create a video for within our group. The song already has a video which was released on the album 'Let Go' in June 2002. I am going to analyse this music video because it will help me to understand the genre and style of Avril Lavigne's music videos and therefore help us to create a music video that fits into the right genre. The narrative of the video is similar to the song but it is only briefly shown in the music video. The Video is mainly made up of Avril and her band skating around an urban location. Throughout the video, people promote Avril Lavigne with a red symbol of a star in rebellious ways. At the beginning you can see it graffitied on the side of a building, there is also graffiti on the surface of the road and you see a boy and a girl running through a shopping mall, throwing fliers about. The significance of this is that it shows rebellion and fits in with the punk genre. Towards the end of the video we see Avril and the band doing a live performance on top of cars in the centre of a crowded city, live performance is common in punk/rock genres because it shows the authenticity of the band, this is what makes Avril Lavigne lean towards the punk genre rather than pop because this would not happen in a pop video. The clothes that Avril Lavigne and her band wear are also quite punk rock with coloured t-shirts, baggy jeans and converse. The fact that the location is very urban also reinforces the punk/rock genre because it is busy, fast and loud just like the music. The editing in this music video has quite fast cuts and things which gives the song an edgy feel.
