Avril Lavigne - Hot Music Video Analysis

The video I am analysing is Girlfriend by Avril Lavigne. The video has a very strong narrative running all the way through of an incompatible relationship.  There are 4 different scenarios in this music video. The first is the main narrative of the relationship between the punk/rock boy and the geeky girl. In this narrative there is also a punk/rock girl who tries to steal the boyfriend of the geeky girl. The two girls in this narrative are played by Avril Lavigne. This narrative shows the rock side of Avril, as she is dressed predominantly in black and with black hair, acting rebelliously. The second scenario shows Avril and her band playing on a stage. Avril is dressed differently in this scenario; she has ditched the rock look and chosen a more punk look, wearing a simple white top and shorts with fishnet tights on. This shows her transition from rock to a punk artist. This shows how she is changing her image to appeal to a more mature, mainstream audience.  In the third scenario Avril seems to be dancing at a party. Her outfit has changed yet again to a more quirky style; she is wearing a blue top with a picture of a tie printed on it with tartan shorts and tights. The top she is wearing in this scenario links back to the Sk8er Boi video, as she is wearing just a simple top with a tie around her neck, however in this video it is portrayed in a more stylish way. The fourth scenario brings the narrative to a close. This scene is set in what looks like a girls toilet. Avril and her friends are seen to ensure other girls using the toilets leave by intimidating them, this shows Avril’s rebellious side and attitude. This video shows a transition in Avril Lavigne’s style of music and fashion as part of the video shows her in more of a rock outfit and attitude, however in the remainder of the video she is seen to portray a more mature punkish attitude.
